PRESS RELEASE

Beer Belly Two to end its run

After 24 years of raising money for local charities, the Beer Belly Two is ending its event. The decision was made after the 2012 attendance was low due to the new requirements imposed on the run.

In 1987, after three local guys ran a race in Milwaukee that featured mandatory beer stops, one of the guys came up with the idea to start a charity run in Green Bay with a similar concept and call it the Beer Belly Two. The race would be two miles with four beer stops and root beer for all the runners not yet at the age of 21 or those that didn't care to partake of beer.

The first race was held in 1989 along W. Mason between Packerland Drive and Hobart Street. The first race drew 996 runners/walkers. During some of the best years of the run the event drew close to 2000 participants. The last race which was held in June of 2012 was in Suamico starting and finishing at Idlewild Park. That race drew 737 runners/walkers.

Sponsors were recruited to cover the entire cost of the race, which runs in the neighborhood of $10,000, and supplies were also donated for the event. This allowed the registration fees to go directly to the charities. Since the inception of the run, the Beer Belly Two has raised $465,000 for charity.

Thank you to all of the participants, sponsors and volunteers who helped make this event such a success for so many years.

What better way to celebrate Wisconsin’s storied affair with it’s favorite adult beverage? How about combining it with a running event with all proceeds benefiting local charities?

Exercise? Check!

Beer? Check!

Fun? Check!

Helping out those in need? Double check!

Some would say beer and Wisconsin go together like cheese and crackers. Well here at the Beer Belly Two run, we like to say beer and running make for an even better pairing. The cherry on top of this already great event is that all proceeds benefit four Green Bay charities, the Golden House, Brown County Food & Hunger, Ecumenical Partnership for Housing, and Families of Children with Cancer. So, not only are you running for tasty brews (or rootbeer for those under the age of 21), but you’re running for a local cause. Immediately following will be the Annual Suamico Firefighters Association Summer Picnic, also located in Idlewild Park.

Due to race and city regulations, your very own ice cold beer will be featured at the end of the race in our new beer garden. For this reason a valid ID is required on race day. Root beer and water will still be served along the route.

The start of the annual Beer Belly Two is scheduled for SATURDAY (no longer on Sunday), June 23rd at 11:00 AM at Idlewild Park in Suamico. Again, a valid ID is necessary to enjoy the festivities in the beer garden. Join our facebook group to get details, running tips, and more. Help spread the word to family, friends, and co-workers. The more participants we have, the more money we can donate to our charities!
